The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has received official recognition from the African Boxing Union (ABU), marking a significant milestone for professional boxing in Uganda.
In a letter dated March 4, 2025, ABU President and Vice-President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Houcine Houichi, confirmed the recognition following UBF’s request for affiliation.
The decision comes after a review of the Uganda Sports Act 2023, which aims to streamline governance and development in Ugandan sports.
According to Houichi, ABU will now collaborate with UBF to promote professional boxing and host ABU championship events in Uganda.
This partnership is expected to provide Ugandan boxers with greater opportunities on the continental and global stage.
“This decision aligns with our commitment to ensuring proper governance, regulation, and development of boxing across the African continent,” Houichi stated in the letter addressed to UBF President Moses Muhangi.
The recognition paves the way for Uganda’s boxing industry to benefit from structured development programs, exposure to international competitions, and potential partnerships with global bodies like the WBC.
The letter was also copied to key Ugandan sports stakeholders, including the Minister of Sports & Education, the State Minister for Sports, and the leadership of the National Council of Sports (NCS).
This latest development underscores the growing influence of Ugandan boxing and the potential for the sport to thrive under improved governance and strategic partnerships.
