The burial took place on Monday, March 3, with family, friends, and members of the football community gathering to bid him a final farewell.

Vipers confirmed his burial, paying tribute to the player who had made a lasting impact at the club.

“This evening, our brother, colleague, and champion, Abubakar Lawal, was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Sokoto, Nigeria,” the club posted on its official X handle on Monday evening.

The club further highlighted the overwhelming respect shown during Lawal’s send-off, a testament to the kind of person he was both on and off the pitch.

“The send-off was a clear testament to the impact he had on people. He was a people person. The respect shown was overwhelming and truly appreciated. We will forever miss you, Lawal. Rest in Peace, Man From Sokoto,” Vipers added.

Lawal’s passing came as a shock to the football community, with tributes pouring in from teammates, coaches, and fans who remembered him for his dedication and professionalism.

His time at Vipers, spanning almost three years, was marked by important contributions, including his historic goal in the club’s first-ever CAF Champions League group-stage campaign.

His teammates, club officials and the football community at large held a ‘dua’ prayer session at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, last Thursday before his body was repatriated to Nigeria.

Vipers President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa ensured that Lawal was given a dignified send-off, covering all expenses related to his return home.

He also pledged to continue paying the player’s salary to his family for the next six months.
