The 2025 I&M Bank Katogo Golf Series launched in spectacular fashion on Saturday at Entebbe Club, drawing over 150 golfers for an exhilarating opener that set the stage for an exciting season.
Emerging victorious in the season’s first round were Team P&B in the men’s category and Fairway Zokka in the women’s category.
Team P&B, represented by Bob Matisiko and Peter Atwine, clinched the top spot with 57 points, earning themselves two RwandAir tickets and I&M Bank goodies.
In the women’s division, Team Fairway Zokka, comprised of Edith Wamala and Suzan Achieng, triumphed with 59 points, taking home a weekend getaway for two at the Kampala Serena Hotel, alongside I&M Bank goodies.
The event unveiled a novel “Rejected” format that challenged participants with strategic gameplay. Under this format, opposing teams determined the placement of second shots on 12 of the 18 holes, adding a competitive twist.
Teams had to enter their best net score on these 12 holes, while for the remaining six, where they played from preferred positions, the worst score was recorded.
Reflecting on their win, Peter Atwine of Team P&B expressed his joy: “We worked well together and stayed focused. It’s an amazing feeling winning the season opener, but even a better feeling being the overall winners. We really appreciate the organizers and partners for putting together such a challenging tournament, and a lit 19th hole experience.”
Echoing similar sentiments, Suzan Achieng of Fairway Zokka said, “The tournament was both competitive and fun, making it a great experience for all golfers.”
Timothy Musiime, Chief Financial Officer of I&M Bank, lauded the series for fostering community connections and elevating the sport.
“This year, we aim to make the series even bigger and better, with exciting new formats, cross-border engagements—including a Rwanda leg in plan—and meaningful partnerships that extend beyond the course,” Musiime remarked.
Katogo Captain Elly Mukasa reaffirmed the inclusive and innovative nature of the series, thanking sponsors and partners for their continued support.
“Together we’re growing the game and making a difference in our communities,” Mukasa noted.
Other notable winners included men’s runners-up The Protons, featuring Michael Andama and Jim Kamanyi, and women’s runners-up Game Changers, comprising Diana Anubekyana and Rita Apell.
The series opener also paid homage to the late professional golfer Brian Toolit, with participants observing a moment of silence. The 19th hole festivities featured vibrant performances by Naava Grey and comedian Patrick Idiringi, adding a celebratory flair to the evening.
Looking ahead, the second quarterly event is scheduled for May 31, followed by the third on August 9, and the grand finale on November 29.
