Over 150 Ugandans were on Tuesday seen off to Kenya for the World Rally Championship due 20th- 23rd this month.
The flag-off was done by Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda Joash Maangi at the Kenyan embassy in Kololo.
The ambassador believes the sport has propelled sports tourism on top of increasing East Africa’s regional market of which Uganda is a beneficiary.
“For us as a country, this event is very important because we are the East st African motorsport destination. Last year, it was estimated that at least 10,000 motorsport enthusiasts attended the event. It increases regional marketing markets and the numbers are expected to surpass 30,000 this year,” noted Maangi.
Uganda will be represented by two drivers at the championship due 20-23rd this month, including Yasin Nasser in his Ford Fiesta R5 and Timothy Gawaya.
“I am going for enjoyment and I expect a better competition. Good enough we have two Ugandans in the cockpit and we shall cheer them on,” noted Sandra Nabasirye, a rally enthusiast.
The Safari Rally Kenya is the third round of this year’s World Rally Championship and over 30 crews are anticipated to start the event.
