Mozambique claimed a crucial 3-1 win over Uganda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier clash at the Cairo International Stadium.
The result strengthens Mozambique’s position in the qualification race, while Uganda’s campaign suffered another setback.
The game began at a blistering pace, with Mozambique taking the lead just four minutes in through Pepo whose direct corner kick beat Uganda Cranes number one Isma Watenga.
Uganda responded quickly, equalizing in the ninth minute when Muhammad Shaban fired past the goalkeeper.
However, Mozambique restored their lead in the 15th minute, with Pepo striking again capitalising in another Isma Watenga mistake to make it 2-1.
Uganda’s challenge became even tougher in the 36th minute when striker Denis Omedi was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Mozambique took full advantage, adding a third goal through Tanley Ratifo just before halftime.
The second half saw Paul Put replace Watenga for Alionzi as Uganda attempted to mount a comeback, with Seemugabi coming closest when his shot rattled the crossbar in the 60th minute.
However, Mozambique managed the game well, maintaining possession and making key substitutions to see out the win comfortably.
The victory puts Mozambique in a stronger position in the qualifiers at 12 points to top Group G while Uganda faces an uphill battle to recover, languishing in the second last position with 6 points.
The Cranes will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Guinea at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole.
