Dr. Rukare Retained as UOC Elects New Executive

In a largely uncontested election held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Dr. Donald Rukare has been re-elected as President of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) for a second term, securing his position for another four years.

The elective assembly, conducted with a sense of unity and purpose, saw several key figures retain their positions, signaling a desire for continuity and stability within the national Olympic body.

Dr. Rukare, who assumed the presidency in 2021, will continue to steer Uganda’s Olympic movement, building upon the foundations laid during his initial term.

His unopposed re-election underscores the confidence placed in his leadership by the UOC’s member federations.

“In the next four years, our focus remains on athlete development, governance, and strengthening Uganda’s presence on the global Olympic stage,” Dr. Rukare stated following his re-election.

He emphasized the importance of fostering a robust sporting environment that allows Ugandan athletes to excel at the highest levels.

The assembly also saw the seamless re-election of several key executives, including General Secretary Beatrice Ayikoru, Treasurer Sadiq Nasiwu, 2nd Vice President Moses Mwase, and executive committee members Anne Mungoma and Harriet Ayaa.

However, the election was not without its moments of intense competition. The most closely watched contest was for the 1st Vice President position, where Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe triumphed over incumbent Dunstan Nsubuga.

Further changes to the executive committee saw Uganda Table Tennis Association President Robert Jaggwe and Richard Asiimwe elected as new members.

Additionally, Gloria Dhamuzungu was appointed as Assistant General Secretary, adding to the diversity and depth of the UOC’s administrative team.

The newly elected executive committee is expected to address several key challenges facing Ugandan sports, including improving athlete training facilities, enhancing governance structures, and securing adequate funding for national teams.
