Lithuania launched their FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifying campaign with a dramatic 2-2 draw against Finland, overcoming a two-goal deficit in front of their home crowd in Kaunas.
The Group G encounter was marked by determination, skill, and a touch of fortune as both sides showcased their ambitions for a spot in the global showcase.
Finland seized control of the match early, delivering a double blow within the opening 17 minutes. Just three minutes in, Daniel Hakans showcased his trickery down the wing, cutting into the box to tee up Joel Pohjanpalo.
Though Pohjanpalo’s initial effort was heroically blocked off the line, the ball rebounded fortuitously off Kaan Kairinen, giving the visitors an unexpected lead.
Lithuania’s challenge grew steeper when Edvinas Girdvainis committed a reckless foul on Hakans inside the penalty area. Pohjanpalo stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Ernestas Šetkus, doubling Finland’s advantage.
The hosts, struggling to find rhythm, struck back late in the first half. Armandas Kucys fired a powerful shot into the back of the net in the 39th minute after a precise cutback from Artur Dolznikov. The goal reignited Lithuania’s belief and galvanized their home supporters.
Lithuania’s persistence paid dividends once more in the 69th minute. Gvidas Gineitis unleashed a thunderous strike from 35 yards out, with his curling effort evading Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to nestle perfectly into the bottom-left corner. It was a moment of brilliance that epitomized Lithuania’s resilience and determination.
Finland pushed forward in search of a winner, with veteran striker Teemu Pukki nearly restoring their lead in the closing stages. However, his sliced effort sailed wide, leaving both teams to settle for a point each.
The road to the FIFA World Cup 26™ follows a familiar structure, with 12 groups of four or five teams battling it out.
The group winners will claim direct qualification, while the second-placed teams and four top-ranked UEFA Nations League sides will enter a 16-team playoff for the continent’s remaining slots.
