World Athletics Confirms Hosts for Upcoming Series Events

The 2026 World Athletics Relays will take place in Gaborone, Botswana, on May 2-3, marking the first time Botswana will host a World Athletics Series event.

Botswana’s commitment to athletics, as highlighted by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, demonstrates Africa’s growing expertise in organizing world-class events.

Jacob Kelebeng, Botswana’s Minister of Sport and Arts, expressed immense pride, emphasizing the event’s potential to inspire national passion and unity.

The World Athletics Relays will return to Nassau, The Bahamas, for the fifth time in April 2028. Previous editions hosted by The Bahamas have set the standard for thrilling competition, and the country’s enthusiasm remains high. Mario Bowleg, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, highlighted fond memories of past relays and extended a warm invitation to athletes and fans.

Meanwhile, Brasília, Brazil, will host the 2026 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships on April 12. This marks Brazil’s continued legacy as a host nation for major athletics events, including the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Renato Junqueira, Secretary of Sports and Recreation for the Federal District, affirmed Brasília’s readiness to host, citing its infrastructure, logistics, and iconic setting.

Beyond event locations, World Athletics continues to champion progress in gender equity and governance. The newly approved Gender Leadership Strategy for 2025-2027 outlines initiatives to empower women in athletics and strengthen gender equity across various roles.
