More than 50,000 athletes are expected to participate in the inaugural Coffee Marathon, officially launched today at Twed Towers in Kampala.
The event is scheduled to take place on May 24, 2025, at the Inspire Africa Coffee Park, located in the picturesque Kabuhungu Hills of Rwashamire Town Council, Ntungamo District.
Organized under the theme “Uplifting the Rural Coffee Woman Out of Poverty,” the Coffee Marathon seeks to raise UGX 2 billion in support of rural women coffee farmers—described by organizers as the unsung heroes behind one of Uganda’s leading export commodities.
“This marathon is more than just a run—it’s a movement for economic transformation. We are running to change lives, especially those of the rural women growing our coffee,” said Dr. Nelson Tugume, CEO of Inspire Africa and the visionary behind the event.
The marathon will feature four race categories: 5km, 10km, 21km, and 42km. While the 5km race will be non-competitive and designed for fun, cash prizes and awards will be available for top performers in the 10km, 21km, and 42km events.
At least 50 athletes are expected to walk away with rewards across various categories.
“We’ve designed this event to cater to both professionals and casual runners,” said Apollo Musherure, the marathon’s technical organizer.
Adding star power to the event is Ugandan long-distance icon Dorcus Inzikuru, who has been named the official ambassador for the Coffee Marathon.
Her involvement is expected to motivate participants and inspire a new generation of runners.
Registration for the marathon is now open at a fee of UGX 30,000. Participants will receive a full marathon kit and gain access to an after-run concert.
The Coffee Marathon is organized by Inspire Africa in partnership with both local and international stakeholders. It aims to blend athletics with community development and social impact.
