Two teenagers tragically lost their lives following a confrontation between fans and police ahead of Chilean club Colo Colo’s Copa Libertadores match against Brazilian side Fortaleza.
The incident occurred outside the Monumental Stadium in Santiago, where police blocked approximately 100 fans attempting to enter.
Local prosecutor Francisco Morales revealed that the deaths were caused by a fence crushing the victims, aged 13 and 18, and an investigation is underway to determine whether a police vehicle was involved.
Police general Alex Bahamondes confirmed that a police officer has been charged, with statements being collected regarding the events.
The group-stage match initially began but was later canceled in light of the tragedy.
South American football’s governing body, Conmebol, expressed its sorrow, stating, “We deeply regret the death of two fans near the Monumental Stadium.” The organization extended condolences to the victims’ families and pledged to send all relevant information to its disciplinary committee.
