Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga clinched the Kampala Zone boys football title after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kawempe Muslim Secondary School in the final played at Kibuli SS grounds on Friday afternoon.
The decisive goal came in the 31st minute, handing Uganda Martyrs their first championship triumph in recent years and denying Kawempe Muslim a long-awaited breakthrough after years of near-misses.
Kawempe Muslim, who were hoping to bounce back from last year’s heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Kibuli SS in the final, fell short once again despite a promising run to this year’s title match.
They had earlier eliminated Lubiri SS in the semi-finals after a tense 7-6 penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Uganda Martyrs, on the other hand, advanced to the final after edging hosts Kibuli SS 1-0 and maintained their solid defensive record by shutting out Kawempe Muslim in the final.
The two finalists had faced off earlier in the qualifiers, with Kawempe racing to a two-goal lead before Uganda Martyrs rallied to force a draw — a result that hinted at the close margins between the sides heading into the final.
This time, however, it was Uganda Martyrs who held firm, capitalising on their first-half advantage and showing maturity in game management to see out the win.
