AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan has been discharged from the hospital following a clash of heads with teammate Alex Jimenez during Friday’s commanding 4-0 Serie A win over Udinese.
The incident, which occurred in the 51st minute, initially appeared serious, as Maignan seemed to lose consciousness on the pitch. However, he regained full awareness and was carried off on a stretcher after receiving medical attention.
Milan confirmed that Maignan was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was released on Saturday morning after tests revealed no significant issues. Defender Matteo Gabbia reassured fans about Maignan’s condition, stating, “Fortunately, Mike is fine… He’s a great captain.”
Manager Sergio Conceicao praised Udinese’s fans for their class and compassion during the incident, as they applauded Maignan while he was being stretchered off. “It impressed me,” said Conceicao. “That applause was an incredible gesture. In 40 years of football, I have seen few gestures like that.”
The show of sportsmanship stood in contrast to Maignan’s last visit to Udinese in January 2024, when he and his teammates endured racial abuse from home fans—a situation that led to a partial stadium closure as punishment.
On the pitch, Milan dominated the match with goals from Rafael Leao and Strahinja Pavlovic in the first half, followed by Theo Hernandez and Tijjani Reijnders in the closing stages.
The victory strengthens Milan’s push in the league ahead of hosting Atalanta on 20 April and their crucial Coppa Italia semi-final second leg against Inter Milan on 23 April, with the tie currently level at 1-1.
