Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has extended warm congratulations to the Uganda U17 national football team, the Cubs, following their historic qualification for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup.
This milestone marks the first time a Ugandan football team has reached the finals of any FIFA World Cup tournament.
In a statement issued shortly after Uganda’s 2-1 victory over The Gambia in a high-stakes playoff in Morocco, Among praised the team’s resilience and determination.
“I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Uganda U17 national team, the Uganda Cubs, for making history by becoming the first Ugandan football team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup tournament,” she said.
The Cubs, under the guidance of head coach Brian Ssenyondo, rallied from an early deficit to secure victory through a first-half brace by James Bogere, ensuring their spot at the tournament scheduled to take place in Qatar from November 3 to 27.
“I commend the team for demonstrating the true spirit of Uganda, as they overcame an early setback to secure the win that earned them a place in the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar,” Among added.
She further applauded the efforts of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the technical team, and the players for their role in delivering this landmark achievement.
“On behalf of the Parliament of Uganda and myself, I congratulate the FUFA leadership, the entire football fraternity, Coach Brian Ssenyondo, together with the technical team and the gallant young players for proudly representing our country. We are indeed a proud nation,” she stated.
Uganda will be part of the expanded 48-team tournament in Qatar later this year.
