The Sacramento Kings have announced their decision to part ways with general manager Monte McNair, marking the end of a tenure that saw the franchise end its historic 16-season playoff drought.
The breakup was reportedly mutual and occurred shortly after the Kings’ season concluded with a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament.
McNair, hired before the start of the 2020-21 season, played a pivotal role in reshaping the team’s fortunes.
Under his leadership, the Kings achieved a 48-34 record in 2023, securing third place in the Western Conference and reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2006. McNair was recognized for his efforts by winning the NBA Executive of the Year award for the 2022-23 season.
Despite achieving 40-win seasons for three consecutive years—a feat the team had not managed once during the prior 16 seasons—the Kings struggled to take the next step in becoming true contenders in the Western Conference.
The team lost a tightly contested seven-game series to the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2023 playoffs and failed to advance beyond the Play-In Tournament in the past two seasons.
