Burnley showed their mettle by overcoming a goal deficit and a determined nine-man Watford side to secure a 2-1 victory, taking a major step towards automatic promotion to the Premier League.
The win, spearheaded by goals from Zian Flemming and captain Josh Brownhill, not only extended Burnley’s unbeaten league run to a record-equalling 30 games but also positioned them three points clear at the top of the Championship.
Scott Parker’s side faced an early setback as Mamadou Doumbia headed Watford into the lead, dashing Burnley’s hopes of setting a new English record with a 30th clean sheet of the season.
However, the Clarets remained resolute, recovering through Flemming’s header late in the first half and Brownhill’s decisive goal just before the hour mark.
Watford’s chances were further hampered by red cards for captain Moussa Sissoko and Edo Kayembe, both dismissed after picking up two yellows in quick succession.
Despite the double blow, Watford pushed hard in the closing stages, with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford delivering a string of crucial saves to maintain his side’s lead.
Burnley now stands on the cusp of a Premier League return and could confirm their promotion as early as Monday with a victory over third-placed Sheffield United.
