The 2025 London Marathon set a new world record for finishers on Sunday, with 56,640 runners completing the 26.2-mile course despite hot conditions.
This surpasses the previous record held by the New York Marathon.
Organizers noted the event’s popularity, with over 840,000 ballot applications for the 2025 race and over £1.3 billion raised for charity since 1981. The ballot for the 2026 race is now open.
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa won the elite women’s race in a world record for a women’s-only field, while Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe triumphed in the men’s event.
Swiss athletes Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug won the wheelchair races, with Debrunner breaking her own course record.
Saturday’s Mini London Marathon also saw a record 15,000 young participants.
