Uganda will mark a century of athletics history with a major celebration on June 7, 2025, as the country hosts the Akii-Bua Memorial Invitational at Namboole Stadium.
The event is being held in honor of 100 years of Ugandan track and field and will bring together elite and local athletes in a day-long festival of sport, competition, and entertainment.
The meet will feature the top eight athletes in each race, with two categories of competition: invitational and local.
In the invitational segment, male athletes will compete in the 100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, and long jump, while female athletes will feature in the 400m, 800m, 5000m, and javelin.
Winners in these races will share a total prize purse of $5,000, with the top finisher receiving $1,600. The rest of the finalists will earn $1,000, $800, $600, $400, $300, $200, and $100 respectively.
Local athletes will also get a chance to shine in a separate competition featuring men’s 100m, 400m, 800m, and shot put, as well as women’s 100m, 800m, 1500m, and long jump.
The top eight finishers in each local event will take home cash prizes ranging from UGX 350,000 for first place to UGX 50,000 for eighth.
The celebrations will begin early in the day with a 10km road race at 7:00 AM, followed by a Kids’ Athletics session from 9:30 to 10:00 AM. The elite competitions are scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
Beyond the track, organizers are planning a festival atmosphere with corporate relays, family fun zones, and live performances from top Ugandan artists.
