Carlos Alcaraz defeated home hope Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) in Friday’s Italian Open semifinal, setting up a possible blockbuster final against Jannik Sinner.
Alcaraz overcame a frustrated Musetti in just over two hours, reaching his fourth final of the season before the French Open.
He now awaits the result of Sinner’s semifinal against Tommy Paul. World No. 1 Sinner is the strong favourite after his impressive win over Casper Ruud.
Musetti struggled with errors and on-court frustration, receiving a warning in the first set. While he showed fight in the second, Alcaraz ultimately prevailed in the tie-break.
In earlier action, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini reached her second final of the week, partnering with Sara Errani to advance in the doubles.
Paolini will also contest the singles final against Coco Gauff on Saturday, aiming to be the first Italian woman to win in Rome since 1985.
