Nnaabagereka Urges More Investment in Sports as She Welcomes FUFA Women’s Super League Trophy

Her Royal Highness the Nnaabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, has lauded FUFA for its continued support of women’s football and called for greater investment in sports to unlock its full potential for national development.

While receiving the new FUFA Women Super League trophy at the Kabaka’s Palace in Mengo, the Nnaabagereka emphasised the vital role sports play in shaping individuals and economies.

She commended the federation and female footballers for raising Uganda’s flag internationally and underscored the positive impact of sports on mental health, discipline, and youth development.

“I want to start by thanking FUFA and our daughters who play football for lifting our flag to international standards,” she said.

“Sport generally is very important, and that is why back in the day, every school had to have a pitch, sports or physical education as a subject, and teachers dedicated to teaching sport. Today, some schools may not have pitches, but the importance of sports among the youth cannot be undermined,” she added.

The Nnaabagereka urged both government and private stakeholders to treat sports as a priority sector, noting its profitability and transformative power.

“Sports trains children to be organised and disciplined, and if taken seriously through committed efforts and investment, it can transform economies because it is a very lucrative industry worldwide,” she said.

Her remarks were made during a ceremony that also marked the launch of the Ttabamiruka W’abakyala 2025 under the theme “Twongere obuwagizi mu mirimu gy’abakyala olw’enkulakulana” (Let’s increase support for women’s projects for development).

The trophy was presented to the Nnaabagereka by former league champions Catherine Nakiridde of UCU Lady Cardinals FC and Lydia Nyandera of Lady Doves FC.

FUFA’s 3rd Vice President, Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, and Deputy Executive Secretary, Rogers Mulindwa, led the delegation.

The FUFA Women Super League trophy tour is making stops with prominent women leaders across Uganda.

It will conclude on Wednesday, 21st May 2025, with a ceremony at State House hosted by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Mama Janet Museveni.
