Absa Bank Uganda has reaffirmed its dedication to growing golf in the country, with Managing Director David Wandera highlighting the bank’s continued support during the 2025 Uganda Golf Club Captain’s Bell tournament.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Wandera emphasized that this year’s sponsorship of Shs179 million, now in its seventh consecutive year, reflects Absa’s commitment to nurturing talent within Uganda’s golf community.
“Our goal is to develop talent, particularly in golf. I’m thrilled to see professionals participating and setting records. Yesterday, a player achieved a course record of 63, a feat never accomplished before. We’re proud to be part of this achievement,” he said.
Wandera also noted the growth of the tournament over time, particularly the increasing number of young participants.
“Looking back, we’ve seen significant growth in participation over the years. I’m excited to see even more members participating this year, especially younger players. Our vision at Absa is to empower Africans and contribute to their stories. Through initiatives like golf, we aim to make a positive impact, one story at a time.”
He also underscored the bank’s commitment to rewarding excellence, citing the Shs20 million professional prize kitty as a key part of that effort.
This year’s tournament saw Uganda national team captain Joseph Cwinya-ai clinch victory in the elite gross category with 200 strokes (-6) over 54 holes. In the professional division, Deo Akope emerged the winner with 277 strokes (-11) after four rounds.
In the ladies’ elite gross category, Peace Kabasweka took top honors with 234 strokes.
