Uganda Cranes forward Denis Omedi’s APR have moved to the summit of the Rwanda Premier League with two games to go, following a 1-0 victory over Gorilla FC and the abrupt suspension of Rayon Sports’ clash against Bugesera FC.
Omedi, who has been in fine form this season, is joined at APR by fellow Uganda internationals Hakim Kiwanuka and Taddeo Lwanga.
The trio now find themselves in prime position to secure the league title after APR climbed to 61 points, two ahead of Rayon Sports.
The turning point in the title race came after Rayon’s fixture against Bugesera was called off in the 60th minute due to crowd trouble.
Fans of the visiting side erupted in protest following controversial officiating, throwing objects onto the pitch and chanting in frustration.
Rayon trailed 2-0 at the time after Farouk Sentongo opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Nigerian striker Umar Abba doubled the lead from the penalty spot.
The visitors had earlier appealed for a penalty of their own in the 53rd minute when Abeddy Biramahire was brought down in the area, but referee Patrick Ngaboyisonga waved play on. Moments later, Bugesera were awarded a spot-kick in what appeared to be a similar incident.
Unable to contain their displeasure, the Rayon fans forced the match to be abandoned, potentially complicating the team’s title chase.
Meanwhile, APR capitalized on the situation with a narrow 1-0 win over Gorilla FC at Kigali Pele Stadium.
The match was decided by a controversial 60th-minute penalty, converted by Djibril Ouatarra. Gorilla ended the game with 10 men after Mohammed Camara was sent off late for dissent.
