PSV Eindhoven dramatically snatched their second consecutive Eredivisie title after rivals Ajax suffered a stunning late-season collapse.
Despite trailing by nine points with five games left, Peter Bosz’s PSV clinched the championship with a 3-1 win at Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.
Ajax, who had defeated PSV 2-0 in March and seemed destined for the title, faltered with two losses and two draws.
A last-gasp equalizer conceded against Groningen proved crucial, allowing PSV, on a six-game winning streak, to leapfrog them.
“After the home defeat against Ajax, we had already given up,” admitted PSV’s Luuk de Jong. “I have never experienced this before… It turns out that hunting is sometimes easier.”
For Ajax, the late capitulation is a bitter blow after a disappointing previous season.
