Former Uganda Cranes captain and legendary goalkeeper Denis Onyango has made it clear that he is not planning to retire from club football at the end of the current season.
Many had begun to speculate that the veteran shot-stopper, who retired from international duty with Uganda in 2021, would hang up his gloves this year.
But Onyango has different plans: “We should go for the 13th title. Yeah, I’m still playing,” Onyango confirmed after Mamelodi Sundowns secured the Betway Premier Soccer League title.
He added: “Of course, the club has to speak to me, but I’m still playing, and I believe I still have the energy to support the boys.”
“To be honest, I’m still here. The body will speak to me eventually, but I can confidently say I’ll be at Mamelodi Sundowns for at least another season.”
Although Onyango’s one-year contract is up, his confidence and commitment strongly suggest that it’s only a matter of time before a new deal is agreed, keeping him at the club that has defined much of his career.
By stating “we go for the 13th,” Onyango is referencing his pursuit of a record-extending 13th PSL title, already holding the record with 12 league titles, the most by any player in the competition’s history.
At 40 years old, Onyango now serves primarily as backup to Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams.
However, he continues to deliver top performances whenever called upon.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Onyango are also eyeing continental glory.
Having last lifted the CAF Champions League in 2016, the Brazilians now face Egyptian side Pyramids in a two-legged final, with the first leg set for Saturday in South Africa.
