Real Madrid have officially announced the appointment of their former midfielder, Xabi Alonso, as the club’s new manager.
Alonso, 43, has signed a three-year deal, running until June 30, 2028.
The highly-touted Spaniard returns to the Santiago Bernabéu after a sensational season with Bayer Leverkusen, where he led them to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a German Cup triumph in his first full season as a senior club manager.
Alonso succeeds Carlo Ancelotti, who coached his final game for Real Madrid on Saturday and will now become the head coach of the Brazilian national team.
