Formula 1’s new rule forcing three tyre compound changes at the Monaco Grand Prix drew mixed reactions from drivers, intended to spice up the usually uneventful race.
While Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton called for F1 to “keep on trying” with the rule, race winner Lando Norris of McLaren and four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull were critical.
Norris argued it created “opportunity by luck” rather than rewarding the best driver, pointing to Verstappen’s late-race gamble for a red flag that didn’t materialize.
Both Norris and Verstappen stressed that Monaco’s inherent difficulty in overtaking remains.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella echoed this, hoping future car changes might improve the situation.
Mercedes’ Toto Wolff agreed the experiment “didn’t change anything,” while Hamilton still lauded Monaco as an “amazing spectacle” despite its racing limitations.
