Ikopit: Kirchner Brings “Tremendous Value” to Rugby Cranes Setup

Uganda Rugby Cranes team manager Andy Ikopit has described the addition of former South African international Zane Kirchner to the national XVs technical team as a significant step forward for Ugandan rugby.

Kirchner, who joins the setup as backs coach, will work under head coach Fred Mudoola and alongside assistants Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola, and Marvin Odongo.

His appointment was recommended by national team consultant Nollis Marais, who is supporting the team’s technical development ahead of the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, a tournament that doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

“Bringing in someone with Zane’s experience adds tremendous value to our setup,” Ikopit said in a press statement.

“He has competed at the highest level and brings insight that can help our players grow. His presence boosts our technical capacity as we build towards a critical year for Ugandan rugby.”

Ikopit emphasized that Kirchner’s international background and proven success at the top level, including titles in both the Currie Cup and Super Rugby, align perfectly with the team’s ambition to reach new competitive heights.

Kirchner’s role will primarily involve shaping the performance of the backs unit as preparations intensify for Uganda’s opening match against Kenya in the Rugby Africa Cup.

Kirchner, who retired after a successful career with the Bulls and the Blue Bulls, also expressed enthusiasm about his new role with Uganda.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Uganda Rugby Cranes,” he said. “The talent is real, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching team to help unlock the next level.”

The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) officially welcomed Kirchner and expressed confidence in the positive impact his experience will bring to the team’s performance and development.
