As the countdown to the State of Ugandan Sport Symposium continues, Abdallah Muhammad, the Publicity Secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), has weighed in on the growing conversation about sports financing and development, calling for greater government responsibility and equitable allocation of resources across disciplines.

Muhammad acknowledged that while government funding for sports has improved over the years, it remains inadequate to match the ambitions and potential of Ugandan sports.

“Over the years, government has steadily increased the funding to sports. However, the funding isn’t at the level that we want,” he said. “Remember, sport is one of the sectors that market Uganda.”

He also pointed to dissatisfaction within the sector over how resources are distributed, noting that some federations continue to produce significant results despite limited financial support.

“There are a lot of mixed feelings. Some federations are complaining about the limited funding they receive from the government. Many federations are doing wonders despite the meagre resources,” Muhammad stated.

In addition to improved funding and fairer distribution, the athletics official urged the government to play a more proactive role in advancing the sector.

He emphasized that the state should not only ensure a stable environment but also actively encourage private sector involvement in sports development.

“The government should take a lead role in promoting sports. It shouldn’t only be in maintaining a conducive environment but also rally the private sector to support sports development,” he added.

Muhammad’s remarks are part of a broader national discussion leading up to The State of Ugandan Sport Symposium scheduled for 17th and 18th of next month at Next Media Park.
