Uganda’s rugby fraternity has been dealt a major blow following the closure of the historic Legends Rugby Grounds in Lugogo, Kampala.
The decision, which takes effect immediately, marks the end of an era for one of the country’s most iconic sporting venues.
In a public notice issued by the facility’s management on Friday morning, Legends announced its closure after the expiry of its lease at Plot 1 & 3 Sports Lane.
“We are deeply grateful for 14 unforgettable years of sports, hospitality, and entertainment,” the statement read. “Your unwavering support has meant everything to us.”
The closure affects four rugby clubs: KCB Kobs, Rhinos, Panthers, and Warriors, that have used the grounds as their home base for the better part of the last two decades.
These clubs now find themselves in urgent need of new training and match-day venues ahead of upcoming league and national engagements.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the landowner, businessman Stanslas Isiagi, has reclaimed the property with plans to redevelop the site into a hotel and a swimming pool.
The lease had previously been held by Rhinos Rugby Club member Daniel Kagwa, who acquired the facility in 2012 under a lease agreement with the Kampala Rugby Union Football Club (KRUFC).
That agreement officially expired on March 31, 2025. KRUFC had earlier failed to renew the land lease, paving the way for a complete change in ownership.
The closure of Legends adds to a turbulent period for the venue. Earlier this year, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) temporarily closed the facility due to unpaid taxes.
The issue was, however, resolved quickly to allow a scheduled Nile Special Rugby League match between KCB KOBs and Stanbic Black Pirates to take place on the same day.
Founded in 2009, Legends Rugby Grounds had evolved into a central hub for Ugandan rugby, also hosting regional tournaments, corporate events, and social gatherings.
Beyond the sport, the facility was a popular destination for Kampala’s entertainment scene, blending rugby, music, and nightlife into a unique experience.
