Oscar Piastri secured his fifth win of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix today, leading a McLaren one-two with Lando Norris.
The race’s dramatic conclusion saw a late safety car trigger a controversial series of incidents involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, ultimately leading to a 10-second penalty for the Dutchman.
Piastri’s victory extends his championship lead over Norris to 10 points. However, the focus remains on Verstappen’s chaotic final laps.
Forced onto hard tyres after a safety car deployment, Verstappen struggled for grip and was involved in collisions with Charles Leclerc and, critically, George Russell.
The penalty for hitting Russell dropped Verstappen from fifth to 10th place, leaving him 49 points behind Piastri in the standings.
Before the late-race mayhem, Verstappen had pressured the McLarens, but their two-stop strategy proved superior.
Beyond the podium, Nico Hulkenberg secured an impressive fifth place for Sauber, with Fernando Alonso also scoring his first points of the season.
