The President of the Uganda Youth Football Association (UYFA), Robert Kiwanuka, has lauded the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for its sustained efforts in promoting grassroots football, describing its initiatives as crucial to the development of young talent across the country.
Speaking to NBS Sport on Friday night during the football awards ceremony, Mr. Kiwanuka praised FUFA for organizing the prestigious event that honours exceptional achievements in Ugandan football, with a particular focus on emerging players.
“These awards are more than just trophies,” he said. “They serve as a source of inspiration for the young boys and girls who are dreaming of becoming future stars. Recognizing their efforts at an early stage is key to their development and motivation.”
The awards have become a cornerstone of Uganda’s football calendar, spotlighting rising stars and recognizing the contributions of individuals, clubs, and academies to the sport’s growth.
Kiwanuka emphasized that a long-term investment in youth football is vital for the sustained success of the national team. He noted that platforms like the awards ceremony play a critical role in creating a pipeline of skilled players ready for both national and international stages.
In his remarks, Kiwanuka also commended the Government of Uganda for enacting the National Sports Act, a law aimed at improving governance and accountability within the sports sector.
“With this law now in effect, the sports sector and football in particular is better positioned for structured growth,” he said. “It will bring about discipline, fairness, and more professionalism. Young athletes can now grow within a clear legal framework, which protects their rights and guides their development.”
He further called for enhanced collaboration among key stakeholders, including FUFA, the government, private sector sponsors such as MTN, and grassroots organizations. According to Kiwanuka, such partnerships are essential for building a vibrant football ecosystem.
“The future of our national team depends on how well we support and guide our youth today,” he said.
Through its ongoing work with schools and academies, the Uganda Youth Football Association continues to identify and nurture young talent.
Kiwanuka reaffirmed the association’s commitment to ensuring that budding footballers receive the recognition and support necessary to thrive.
