Barcelona sporting director Deco has strongly refuted claims of financial struggles, stating the club is not forced to sell players despite La Liga’s strict financial rules.
His comments follow a successful period for Barcelona, including a domestic treble and a Champions League semi-final appearance.
Deco, 47, who joined in 2023, highlighted that La Liga’s financial fair play rules are tougher than those in other leagues, leading to Barcelona being scrutinized due to its size.
He stressed the club’s stability, noting key contract renewals for rising star Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and manager Hansi Flick, alongside the successful registration of Dani Olmo.
Looking ahead, Deco expressed confidence in new revenue streams from a major Nike deal and the renovated 100,000-seater Nou Camp. He affirmed Barcelona’s commitment to retaining its best players while planning for “two, three or four signings” without excessive spending.
Acknowledging the threat from rivals Real Madrid, who are making significant signings, Deco emphasized the importance of a strong league with competitive top teams.
He also lavished praise on 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who recently signed a new long-term deal.
While cautioning against direct comparisons to Lionel Messi, Deco stated Yamal has the potential to “make history like Leo,” underscoring the club’s focus on nurturing his talent.
