The battle for promotion to the Uganda Premier League and the race for the 2024/25 FUFA Big League title has reached boiling point after Calvary FC climbed to the summit with a resounding 3-0 victory over Kaaro Karungi on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
Playing at their fortress, Midigo Playground in Yumbe, the West Nile-based outfit turned on the style with goals from Christopher Agotre, Simon Peter Odeke, and Junior Emmanuel Ojok.
The commanding performance not only delivered back-to-back wins for Calvary but also propelled them to 48 points from 26 matches, level with second-placed Buhimba United Saints, who have played a game less.
Agotre gave the hosts a dream start, smashing in a thunderbolt from range inside the opening ten minutes.
Despite wasting several opportunities to extend their lead before the break, Calvary remained dominant.
Odeke eventually doubled the advantage just before halftime, leaving the visitors chasing shadows.
Kaaro Karungi’s woes were compounded in the second half when they were reduced to ten men after conceding a penalty.
However, Calvary’s Lawrence Olaboro missed from the spot, squandering a chance to increase the margin.
But there was still time for Ojok to put the result beyond doubt, capping off a flowing team move with a calm finish to make it 3-0.
The win follows Calvary’s 1-0 triumph over Kiyinda Boys just days earlier and underlines their serious intent to secure a historic maiden promotion to the top tier.
With two rounds left, the pressure is firmly on as they battle for one of the three available promotion slots.
Meanwhile, Kaaro Karungi, who had also lost 1-0 to Paidha Black Angels earlier in the week, remain 10th on the table with 30 points from 25 games, only two above the relegation zone.
Elsewhere, the promotion battle remains fierce. Gaddafi surged into third place after a late show earned them a 2-0 win over Arua Hill at the Works Playground in Entebbe.
Veteran striker Frank Kalanda came off the bench to open the scoring in the 82nd minute before Yasir Mugume sealed the result five minutes later.
In Bukedea, MYDA edged Blacks Power 1-0 at Kongunga Playground, handing the visitors their fourth consecutive defeat and causing them to drop to fifth place with 42 points.
The result was a massive boost for MYDA, who jumped out of the relegation zone to 11th with 29 points.
Over in Arua, Onduparaka edged Kigezi Home Boyz 2-1 at the Aba-Bet Green Light Stadium.
Quickfire goals from Junior Andama and Dominic Abonga in the 32nd and 33rd minutes were enough to earn the win, lifting Onduparaka to sixth place on 37 points.
