Ugandan officials have confirmed full government support for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, set to take place from July 8 to 19 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The tournament will act as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Speaking during a press briefing at Next Media Park on Monday, Uganda Rugby Union (URU) President Godwin Kayangwe underscored the role of government involvement in securing the bid to host the tournament.
“When we got this news of winning the bid, of course the government was involved,” he said, attributing the successful bid to strong collaboration between URU and state authorities.
Ambrose Tashobya, Chairperson of the National Council of Sports, delivered a message on behalf of the State Minister for Education and Sports, Peter Ogwang.
He stated, “The government of Uganda is fully supporting this Africa Cup, and we are here to show that support. We affirm our position as government that everything will be okay.”
The event will bring together eight of Africa’s top rugby nations: Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Namibia, Senegal, Morocco, defending champions Zimbabwe, and hosts Uganda.
The winner will qualify directly for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, while the runner-up will earn a place in the intercontinental playoff.
Government and sports officials emphasized that Uganda is prepared to deliver a successful tournament, in partnership with continental and global rugby authorities.
