Rwanda Division Two League side Sunrise Football Club have announced the termination of Head Coach Jackson Mayanja’s contract, effective immediately.
The decision comes in the wake of the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs and a disappointing overall performance in the second division.
Mayanja, a revered Uganda Cranes legend, was appointed to lead Sunrise in November 2023 with the explicit mandate of securing the team’s return to the Rwanda Premier League.
This appointment marked a second opportunity for Mayanja, who had previously been unable to prevent the club’s relegation in the preceding season.
However, under Mayanja’s leadership, Sunrise concluded the current season in third place in Group B, accumulating 41 points and ultimately falling short of the coveted playoff berths.
Mayanja’s contract was set to expire in June, and the club opted against renewal. Sunrise has indicated its intention to swiftly appoint a new coach to steer the team back to the Premier League.
Early reports suggest that Marcel Lomami, a highly respected coach with a proven track record of guiding teams to the Premier League, including Gasogi United and Gorilla, is among the top candidates being considered to take the helm at Sunrise.
