Former Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has been named AS Kigali’s Player of the Season, capping off an impressive campaign in the Rwanda Premier League.
However, his future at the club remains uncertain as he is among 15 players currently out of contract.
Okwi, who played a key role in helping AS Kigali secure a third-place finish behind APR and Rayon Sports, now finds himself at a crossroads with the Rwandan side, which is battling a player exodus and a transfer ban.
The club, backed by the City of Kigali, is unable to register new players due to a FIFA-imposed sanction resulting from the non-payment of former player Raphael Osaluwe.
Officials at AS Kigali are reportedly working to clear the debt to have the ban lifted in time for the 2025/2026 season.
Alongside Okwi, the list of out-of-contract players includes Haruna Niyonzima, Jospin Nshimiyimana, Arthur Nibikora, Marca Nkubana, Aimé Gaël Cuzuzo, Franklin Onyeabor, Hussein Shaban, Prince Buregeya, Osee Iyabivuze, Janvier Benedata, Gilbert Byiringiro, Aimé Ntirushwa, Christophe Bukuru, and Saleh Ishimwe.
