Greenland’s hopes for competitive international football were dashed today as its application for Concacaf membership was unanimously rejected.
The decision, made in Miami, means the world’s largest island, a Danish territory in North America, will continue to be excluded from official international play.
Despite a population of 57,000 and 5,500 registered players, Greenland faces challenges from its harsh Arctic climate, limiting outdoor football to five months a year on gravel or artificial pitches.
Concacaf cited a “thorough assessment” and adherence to statutes for the unanimous rejection.
The setback comes as US President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in the US taking control of Greenland.
