Olympic and world champion Joshua Cheptegei is stepping into a new phase of his storied athletics career, one rooted in legacy and mentorship.
While he remains focused on upcoming competitions, particularly in the marathon, the long-distance star is now increasingly committed to inspiring the next generation of Ugandan athletes.
Speaking to NBS Sport during the 23rd Akii Bua Athletics Meet held at Namboole Stadium over the weekend, Cheptegei outlined his evolving mission.
The reigning Olympic and three-time World 10,000m champion described his growing desire to use his influence to promote athletics and support emerging talent.
“My goal now is to inspire the young generation and Ugandans to love athletics in the sport time,” Cheptegei said.
The 27-year-old emphasized that athletic success goes beyond medals and podium finishes. He advised young runners to embrace hard work, maintain focus, and adopt a long-term perspective—often doing more than what is expected when others aren’t watching.
Though he is not retiring from competition, Cheptegei’s ambitions are clearly shifting. After dominating the track, he is now turning his attention to the marathon while also positioning himself as a role model and mentor.
Born in Kapchorwa district, Cheptegei holds world records in both the 5000m and 10,000m events.
His achievements have made him one of Uganda’s most celebrated sports figures. Now, as he begins to shape a new path, Cheptegei is determined to ensure that his success translates into opportunities for others.
