Memphis Depay made history on Tuesday, scoring twice in the Netherlands’ dominant 8-0 World Cup qualifier win over Malta.
His brace brought his international goal tally to 50 in 102 appearances, equaling Robin van Persie’s all-time national team scoring record.
Despite the historic achievement, Depay was substituted in the 72nd minute, denying him a hat-trick and sole possession of the record.
Coach Ronald Koeman playfully explained his decision, stating he wanted to keep the forward “hungry” for more goals.
“I equalled Van Persie, I am happy with that,” Depay commented. “But this is just an interim total. Of course I am also going for 51, 52 and also 53.”
Koeman, a consistent backer of Depay, praised his fitness and hunger, adding, “It’s great that he didn’t score the third, because then he stays hungry.”
