The New York Red Bulls have officially promoted former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya to the role of full-time First Team Assistant Coach.
Sekagya moves up from his position as Head Coach of New York Red Bulls II, a role he has held since February 2023.
The club confirmed the promotion on Tuesday, stating that Sekagya will begin his duties immediately with the first team.
His final match in charge of NYRB II will be on Saturday, June 15, against Chattanooga FC at MSU Soccer Park. A new head coach for NYRB II will be named in due course.
Sekagya, 43, guided NYRB II to a fourth-place finish in the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference and has led the team to their best start in franchise history this season, posting an 8-2-2 record and scoring a league-high 27 goals in 12 matches.
During his tenure, the Ugandan coach played a significant role in the development of emerging talents, including Omar Valencia, who leads the first team in assists, and Mohammed Sofo, who has scored seven goals this season.
Sekagya, who made 41 appearances for the New York Red Bulls from 2013 to 2014, was also part of the club’s 2013 Supporters’ Shield-winning side.
His coaching journey with the Red Bulls organization began in 2015, serving first as an assistant coach for NYRB II.
