Namuwongo Blazers will be aiming to maintain their unbeaten run and complete a season double over KCCA Panthers when the two sides face off in a National Basketball League (NBL) clash tonight at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The Blazers, under the stewardship of Coach Steven Nyeko, have been the team to beat this season, coming into the encounter with an imposing 12-0 record.
Their last meeting with the Panthers ended in a dominant 74-37 victory, a result that firmly underlined their championship credentials.
That first-round win was anchored by the trio of Tony Drileba, Jimmy Enabu, and James Okello, each instrumental in both ends of the court.
As the second round gathers steam, the Blazers are coming off a hard-fought 81-71 win over JT Jaguars.
The victory was even more impressive considering they were without guards Jimmy Enabu, Wadaya Blair, and Richard Ongom, all of whom remain doubtful for tonight’s game.
The Blazers are also expected to parade their newest acquisition, Ivan Muhwezi, a high-impact guard signed from City Oilers.
His addition is expected to further sharpen their already potent backcourt and add more versatility to their offensive setups.
In contrast, the Panthers are in a downward spiral. Despite a decent start to the season that saw them win eight of their first eleven games, they’ve now lost three in a row, falling to JT Jaguars, Kampala Rockets, and UCU Canons.
Coach Marc Jjuuko will need to summon a big response from his squad, especially from experienced campaigners like Davis Asiimwe, Ivan Rumanyika, Caesar Kizito, and Emmanuel Ateng, if they are to halt the Blazers’ momentum.
With tip-off set for 9 PM and live coverage on NBS Sport, the showdown promises high-stakes basketball as the league’s top contenders collide.
In the women’s division, eleventh-placed Nkumba Lady Marines will have their work cut out when they face table-toppers KCCA Leopards at 7 PM in another live televised game, this time on AfroMobile.
The Leopards, led by a seasoned core, are expected to extend their dominance, while the Marines will be hoping to spring an upset and kick-start a better second half of the season.
Other fixtures scheduled for Wednesday evening include games at Abja Park in Naalya and YMCA in Wandegeya.
At Abja Park, JT Lady Jaguars face Angels at 7 PM before the men’s side, JT Jaguars, host Livingstone at 9 PM.
Over at YMCA, KIU Rangers take on Miracle Eaglets in the women’s game at 7 PM, followed by Sommet versus KIU Titans in the men’s tie at 9 PM.
