The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Seven Talking Points from the 2024/25 Uganda Premier League Season

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has unveiled a detailed roadmap for the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League (UPL) season, which is scheduled to kick off on September 26, 2025.

Alongside the new league season, FUFA has also confirmed dates for the Super 8 tournament, set for September 7 to 17, and the FUFA Super Cup, slated for September 21.

This structured calendar was revealed as part of the federation’s newly released Club Licensing Action Plan, designed to uphold and enhance professional standards within Ugandan club football.

The licensing process, which is a pre-condition for club participation in the topflight, officially began with a Club Licensing Committee meeting on May 20 to deliberate on the framework for the new campaign.

Subsequently, the Men’s and Women’s Club Licensing Regulations – Edition 2025 were released on June 10.

FUFA has also announced a pre-season meeting scheduled for June 26, where chairpersons and CEOs of UPL clubs will convene to further engage with the licensing requirements.

The meeting will also see the launch of the Club Licensing Points Scoring System, which will assess each club’s eligibility based on set criteria.

In terms of logistics, the primary registration window for UPL clubs will run from July 1 to September 1.

Within this period, physical inspection visits to club facilities will be carried out between July 10 and 31. The same day marks the deadline for submission of all necessary documents.

FUFA will then announce licensing decisions between August 4 and 6, while any appeals, if necessary, will be reviewed by the appellant body on August 12.

The final list of licensed clubs is expected to be communicated to the Uganda Premier League secretariat by August 15, paving the way for the official fixture list release on August 26.

This season’s licensing process is notable for the transition to a fully digital system, a move FUFA believes will enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability across club operations.
