Premier League champions Liverpool have agreed a blockbuster £116m deal to sign German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.
The transfer, an initial £100m plus £16m in add-ons, could make the 22-year-old the most expensive player in British football history if all bonuses are met, surpassing Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez.
Wirtz, who preferred a move to Anfield over interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga in 2024.
He is Liverpool’s second signing from Leverkusen this summer, following Jeremie Frimpong, as the Reds significantly bolster their squad after winning the 2024-25 Premier League title. The club is also pursuing Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.
Departures include Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford and Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid.
Former coach Edu Rubio praised Wirtz’s versatility and work ethic, highlighting his ability to break lines and add goals to the squad.
