Veteran Formula 1 steward Derek Warwick has been suspended from his role for this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, the FIA announced.
The former F1 driver’s suspension is “following recent unauthorised media comments” where he publicly discussed a penalty given to Max Verstappen at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Warwick will be replaced by Enrique Bernoldi and will resume his duties at the Austrian Grand Prix. The FIA stated Warwick “acknowledges that his comments were ill-advised in his role as an FIA steward and has apologised.”
This marks the second time a driver steward has faced disciplinary action for commenting on races, following Johnny Herbert’s removal in January for similar reasons.
The suspension also comes amidst recent controversial statute changes within the FIA, drawing criticism regarding the organization’s governance under president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
