Fluminense kicked off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund in their Group F opener at MetLife Stadium.
Despite dominating the match and creating numerous chances, the Brazilian champions were denied by an exceptional performance from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
In front of a supportive home crowd of 34,736, Fluminense controlled the first half, with Jhon Arias and Martinelli both coming close.
Dortmund failed to register a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes, relying heavily on Kobel’s heroics.
The second half saw Kobel continue his stellar form, making a remarkable double-save from Everaldo and Nonato in the 69th minute.
Despite late efforts from both sides, the deadlock remained unbroken.
With mild temperatures providing a reprieve from the tournament’s heat concerns, Fluminense will now face Ulsan HD at MetLife on Saturday, while Dortmund heads to Cincinnati to play Mamelodi Sundowns.
