Kayondo Named Buddu Captain Ahead of 2025 Masaza Cup

Buddu Ssaza, the defending Masaza Cup champions, have named Joseph Kayondo as their new captain for the 2025 campaign.

Kayondo, who was recently crowned MVP of the 2024/25 Pepsi University League, steps into the role after an outstanding season that saw him draw comparisons to Ugandan football icon Paul Hasule.

A dynamic right-back, Kayondo led Uganda Martyrs University to the 2025 University Football League title and was a key figure in the school’s clean sweep of silverware.

In the just-concluded season, he helped the Nkozi-based side win the Masaza Cup, Inter-University Trophy, East African University Trophy, and the Pepsi University League.

His contribution—five goals and two assists from defense—also earned him the Defender of the Season award.

Kayondo replaces Puis Ssebulime, who has moved to Mawokota.

He now faces a new challenge with Buddu as they aim to defend their title in a tough Bulange group featuring Gomba, Busiro, Buluuli, Busujju, and Ssese.

Buddu’s title defense kicks off with a high-stakes opener against Gomba this Saturday, June 21, at Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka City.
