The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit has received FIA Grade 1 status, a crucial development for South Africa’s efforts to bring Formula 1 back to the continent.
This upgrade means Kyalami is now capable of hosting a Grand Prix, reigniting hopes among motorsport fans.
Kyalami, which previously hosted the South African Grand Prix multiple times, has passionately pursued F1’s return.
Circuit owner Toby Venter expressed his excitement, calling it “a defining moment for South African motorsport.”
The circuit has three years to complete minor upgrades, including barrier fencing and drainage, to solidify its new status.
Despite this significant step, Kyalami’s place on the F1 calendar isn’t guaranteed.
The Grade 1 approval is conditional on South Africa securing a spot on the F1 calendar and Kyalami being chosen as the preferred venue.
The circuit faces strong competition, notably from a proposed street circuit in Cape Town.
The coming months will be critical as South Africa continues its push to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
