Veteran Spanish defender Sergio Ramos, 39, scored for Mexican side Monterrey in a surprising 1-1 draw against European giants Inter Milan in their FIFA Club World Cup Group E opener at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday.
Ramos’s 25th-minute header gave Monterrey a shock lead.
However, Lautaro Martinez leveled for Inter just before halftime with a well-worked goal.
Inter, playing their first match under new coach Cristian Chivu after their Champions League final defeat, dominated possession but struggled to break down Monterrey’s deep defense.
Ramos acknowledged the tough opponent, while Chivu admitted his team found it difficult to play against a “very low block.”
Despite Inter’s control, Monterrey almost snatched a winner in stoppage time, with Nelson Deossa shooting into the side netting.
The draw is a significant boost for Monterrey, who next face Argentina’s River Plate.
