Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova announced Thursday that she will retire from professional tennis after this year’s US Open, concluding an illustrious career.
The 35-year-old Czech, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 2 in 2011 when she won her first Wimbledon title, triumphed again at the All England Club in 2014 and reached the Australian Open final in 2019.
“There comes a day that it is time for a new chapter and that time for me has come now,” Kvitova shared on social media, adding that 2025 would be her final season. She expressed excitement for one last appearance at Wimbledon, where she has been granted a wildcard.
Kvitova’s career is marked by incredible resilience, including her return to the sport after a severe hand injury sustained during a 2016 home invasion.
She also won an Olympic bronze medal in 2016 and was a key member of six Czech Fed Cup-winning teams.
After missing the 2024 season to give birth, Kvitova has a 1-6 record since returning. “Tennis has given me everything I have today, and I will continue to be forever grateful to this beautiful sport that I love,” she posted, reflecting on her journey.
