Uganda will not defend their men’s Rugby Africa 7s trophy in Mauritius.
The Rugby Cranes 7s catastrophically fell to South Africa, 26-00, in the quarterfinals on Day Two.
Shock defeat to Ghana in the first match early on Day One blew Uganda’s chances of a successful title defence. The four-time champions recovered and overpowered Côte d’Ivoire but laboured against neighbours Kenya in the pools.
This threw the Rugby Cranes 7s in the dreaded knockout path with South Africa where their campaign ended prematurely.
Pool Phase Results:
• Ghana 17-07 Uganda
• Uganda 43-00 Côte d’Ivoire
• Kenya 12-05 Uganda
Knockout Phase Results (so far):
• QF: South Africa 26-00 Uganda
Uganda will battle for a highest-possible fifth place in the remainder of the tournament.
This means that Uganda will not qualify for the World Rugby 7s Series Division 3 tournament; leaving the men’s 7s program in limbo for the next season.
