Griezmann finally scored in the 87th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Spanish side. Botafogo’s goalkeeper, John Victor Maciel Furtado, was a standout, making crucial saves.
A controversial VAR decision in the first half denied Atletico a penalty, instead awarding Botafogo a free-kick for an earlier foul.
Julian Alvarez was a constant threat for Atletico, while Griezmann’s second-half impact was undeniable.
However, the collective defensive effort of the entire Botafogo team was the true highlight, earning them their progression.
Botafogo, finishing second in Group B, will now face the winner of Group A in the last 16, likely to be Inter Miami or Palmeiras. Atletico Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign has concluded.
